In the Greenhouse...

Or should I say fish house? Our ten 450 gallon tanks are home to many beautiful fish from 3 inches to nearly 2 feet! New fish have been arriving throughout the summer. Our friendly and courteous staff can help you pick out and bag your living, swimming artwork for transport to its new home in your pond.

We also continue to stock a wide variety of lush green aquatics and terrestrial plants. Our greenhouse provides the heat needed for some of the more tender perennials and tropicals. We've got banana plants, thalia, taro, canna, umbrella palm, pitcher plant, papyrus, lemons, lobelia... the list goes on and on!

Bat Boxes

We are now selling bat boxes from local artist/craftsman John D. Butler of Buckner Enterprises here in Monroe. John hand crafts functional art and log furniture from hand-milled cedar. What is a bat box? It's a specially designed box that is placed high on a tree or post that provides a little living space for bats.

When most people think of bats they think of words like spooky, creepy, and 'eeewww!', but bats are actually quite harmless and beneficial to us all. For those of us living in more rural areas, mosquitoes and the dreaded West Nile Virus is of some concern. One of the most effective and environmentally sound ways to control mosquitoes around your home is to install a bat box. A small bat can capture more than 1,200 mosquitoes in a single hour! You can just imagine what one could do with a little help from his friends.

Bats are also good indicators of over all environmental health. Think 'canary in a coal mine'. Because bats are sensitive to high pollution and pesticide levels, they are useful as a warning sign to potential environmental problems. You heard it here!
