Euphorbia 'Blackbird' |
Euphorbia 'Blackbird'
Most euphorbias are chosen for their richly textured foliage, but 'Blackbird' features stunning shades of midnight-purple foliage, as well as contrasting bright red stems and lime-green blossoms. The foliage is by far the darkest yet on any euphorbia, and it keeps this color all season. In spring, bright red stems emerge to support the rounded blooms, held in huge clusters above the foliage. Euphorbia 'Blackbird' is a prolific bloomer, so don't worry about cutting off some of its early flowers, which are actually bracts, to enjoy indoors. This shrub remains compact and bushy, forming 18- to 22-inch mounds at maturity, making it ideal for providing a dark accent in small gardens. A 6" pot is $15. |

Huge garnet-colored flowers are found under the leaves in clusters of 5 or more. This form was selected for its coloring, improved late spring frost tolerance, vigor, and habit. Ribes 'King Edwards'
|
Ribes sanguineum 'King Edwards'
Flowering currant is a reliable performer for the spring garden, blooming every year without any special care needed to be given. Choice variety 'King Edward VII' makes a compact, upright plant that drips with dark red flowers. Like all of the flowering currants, it has a pungent scent that is stronger when the foliage is rubbed or brushed against. Plants can be left unpruned, but for the best performance it is worth cutting the branches that have flowered back to a strong pair of buds just after they have bloomed. A 3 gallon pot is $30.
